DIY:Felt cushion tattoos

BushcraftZ 2014

An easy way to update a cushion cover is to decorate it. These simple cushion tattoos made from  felt are a quick, fun way to give a cushion cover temporary seasonal update. The felt tattoo can easily be replaced in the next season.

Materials:
  • Cushion fabric cushion cover (The tattoos work best on smooth fabrics).
  • Felt squared with sticky backing (available from craft and haberdashery stores)
  • Design (download felt cushion tattoo) or design your own.
  • Carbon paper, pencil, small sharp pointed scissors, measuring tape

Method:
1. Wash and iron the fabric cushion cover.
2. Determine your design or download the design.
TIP: Do not use very fine designs because they have a smaller surface area to adhere to the fabric and may come loose at the edges over time.
3. Transfer the design onto the back of the felt square.
TIP: If you use letters or words copy them in mirror image to the backing so that when you place the design onto the cushion cover the letter or word is in the correct orientation.
4. Cut out the design taking care to have clean lines and sharp corners. Determine the placement of the design on the cushion cover and mark the edges with pins.
5. Carefully remove the backing paper from the cut out felt tattoo and stick the felt onto the cushion cover. Press the edges down firmly to ensure that the tattoo adheres well. For the design linked to this blog the cut out pieces were added to the basic design as show below.
