Messenger bag for knitting and crochet enthusiasts on the go.


BushcraftZ 2014
This messenger bag is designed with a see-through pocket on the inside of the flap. This pocket is useful to hold knitting or crochet patterns that enables to crafter to read the pattern without having to remove it from the bag. Great for the ‘on the go’ crafter who want to utilize any spare time on hand to create.  On the bus, in the car or waiting at the train station the process can go on without having to battle with patterns that can escape.

Materials
  • 50 cm x 150 cm fabric
  • 50 cm x 150 cm fabric for inner lining
  • 75 cm x 150 cm fabric for pocket and flap
  • 35cm x 30 cm clear plastic sheet (plastic sheets are available as table cloth covers at fabric shops)
  • 1.5 m x 2.5 cm wide braid
  • 20 cm x 1.5 cm Velcro
  • General sewing supplies and matching thread
  • Paper, pencil and ruler to make patterns

Method:
Cut the following pattern pieces
  • ·         1X 96cm x 45cm from fabric for outer bag (A)
  • ·         1X 96cm x 45cm from lining fabric for inner bag (B)
  • ·         1X 22cm x 30cm from fabric for pocket (C)
  • ·         1x 131cm x 43xm from fabric for flap (D)
  • ·         1X 27cm x 33 cm clear plastic sheet (E)
  • ·         1X 33cm braid
  • ·         1x 120cm braid (for messenger bag strap)

Assemble messenger bag
  1. Refer to Pattern sheet 1. Place fabric A right side up on a flat surface. Fold over 1 cm seam allowance on all sides of fabric C. Sew the seam allowance into place. Position the prepared fabric C onto the right side of fabric A (Refer to pattern sheet one for exact positioning and stitch lines.) and sew into place.  
  2. Place the ‘male’ side of the Velcro on the right side of fabric A, directly underneath the pocket and stitch into place.
  3. Place fabric A, right sides together and stitch 1 cm wide side seams.  Refer to Pattern sheet 2  in order assemble to construct the base of the bag. Sewing lines are indicated in red. Cut away the corners created for a smooth finish. The base and sides of the bag should be approximately 12cm wide. Turn right side out and ion all seams flat. Fold over a 4 cm hem towards the ‘wrong side’ of the fabric at the top of the bag as indicated on the pattern sheet 2.
  4. For the lining repeat step 3. Do not turn the bag right side out.
  5. Place the lining into the outer bag take care to align the corners, and seams. Position the braid at the side seams and secure the braid between the top edges of the outer bag and lining. Top-stitch along the outer edge of the bag to secure the lining and strap to the bag.

  6. Refer to pattern sheet 3 to construct the flap of the bag. Place the fabric wrong side up. Sew the braid to the top (27cm) edge of the plastic sheet. Refer to the pattern and position the plastic sheet onto the wrong side of the flap. Fold the long sides over twice as indicated in the pattern. Fabric edge should frame and anchor the plastic on the sides. Stitch in place with 2.5cm wide hem. Fold over a 3.5cm - 4cm at the bottom the plastic sheet and stitch a 3.5 cm hem. The top part of the plastic sheet should remain ‘open’ to create a pocket for patterns. Position the ‘female’ part of the Velcro as indicated on the pattern and stitch in place. Fold over a top part of the flap as indicated on the pattern sheet and stitch the edges in place.

  7. To complete the messenger bag, position the flap on the bag so that the Velcro strips match. Pin the plat to the back of the bag, open the flap and stitch it securely in place.
