I wanted to jazz up white cotton T-shirts for the coming summer
and decided to try to achieve the fashionable ‘ombre’ look. Essentially this term refers to a gradual change in
the intensity of the same colour from light to dark.
Materials:
- Dye (prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions)
- Pre-washed white T-shirt
- Rubber gloves
- Large container for the prepared dye
Optional:
- Embroidery cotton, needle and scissors
Method:
1.
Dampen the prewashed T-shirt with water.
2. Dip the T-shirt two-thirds into the dye and allow the dye to
gradually seep into the remaining white section. Once the white section starts
to colour gradually remove the t-shirt from the dye bath in sections to create
the graduated look. You can control the intensity of the dye during the process
by controlling the time which a specific section of the t-shirt is exposed to
the dye.
TIP: Hang
the T-shirt over the side of the dye bath as you remove it from the dye and
allow the dye seep from dark to light.
3.
Wash the dyed T-shirt until the water runs clear. Dry and decorate
if desired.

Optional additional decoration:
The
hand embroidery look is also very fashionable at the moment. I have highlighted certain dye effects of the ombre with
simple straight stitch embroidery on the T-shirt.
