DIY recycle: Deconstructed old book Part 2 - Christmas crackers

BushcraftZ 2013
Christmas crackers are a traditional party favour in South Africa and many other countries. The idea originated as a promotional item for a sweets company where the cracker was intended to resemble a giant wrapped sweet. Today crackers contain small gifts and fun party ice breakers.

Although most shops sell Christmas crackers during the festive season it is easy to make your own from recycled materials lying around the home. These crackers can then be filled with fun surprises for guests to enjoy during Christmas lunch.

Materials
BushcraftZ 2013
  • tissue or any other soft paper
  • carton rolls such as toilet rolls
  • pages from an old book
  • paper remnants in contrasting colour
  • Christmas themed wrapping paper remnants
  • ribbon to match the colour scheme
  • scissors, sticky tape, glue stick, craft knife and cutting mat, craft punch
  • small gifts that can fit into the tube

Method:

Basic Christmas cracker
1. Cut the tissue paper 20 cm longer  than the length of the carton rolls and make sure that it can wrap at least 1.5 times around the roll.
2. Place the carton roll in the middle of the tissue paper and cover the roll. Secure with sticky tape. Close one end with a ribbon and insert the gift(s) into the tube. Take care that the gifts do not protrude from the carton roll and close the other end with another ribbon.

Decorate the Christmas cracker in an ‘old’ book Christmas theme.
3. Measure and cut a sheet of old book paper to fit around the tube. Decorate on edge by punching out a design. Place a strip of contrasting paper behind the design and glue it into place. Wrap this around the cracker and secure with glue and sticky tape.
