Method:
Deconstructing the old book
Look for interesting
old books at charity and second had book stores. The contents is irrelevant but
I always try and see if the book has interesting illustrations, strong cover
and interesting font.

Before deconstructing the old book take a close look to see
how it is constructed. My book was still bound with string. This allowed me to
cut the string and gently remove the pages. This allowed me to yield paper
double the size of the normal page of the book. If this is not possible use a
craft knife to cut or carefully tear the pages from the book.

- Old books often have interesting decorative paper lining the book. These are fantastic to salvage for other craft projects.
- If the book cover is still in good condition and looks interesting it can also be stored for other recycling projects. Keep a look out for other projects from this deconstructed book.
1. Cut 8 pieces of paper 6.5 cm x 5 cm in size.
2. Fold paper the paper lengthwise in half and open up again.

5. Assemble star: Stick a small piece of double sided tape on one short side
of the first piece or use a small amount of craft glue. Place the second piece
on top of this piece. Take care to work accurately and align the sort side of
the second piece with the center line of the first piece.

7. To insert the last place the double sided tape ( or glue) on the free short side of the 7th
piece and in the same position on the remaining 8th piece. Slip the
8th piece over the 7th piece and under the first piece to
complete the star. The center of the star can be decorated with a trinket.

Gift Bag:
BushcraftZ 2013 |
1. Place two sheets of the old book paper on top of each other.
Thread the sewing machine with contrasting cotton thread and select a decorative
stitch. Sew around three edges of the paper to make a bag.
TIP: If the book pages are small sew a few pages together to
make a larger piece creating a patchwork effect.
2. I cut a slit into the top of the bag and attached a card-stock
remnant decorated with the origami star.
3. Decorate a wooden peg by painting it or using Washi tape.
4. Insert a gift and close the bag with the matching peg.
GIFT IDEA: Make few of these gift bags in various sizes and also
make matching tags with different themes. Package them together with pegs,
trinkets and string for a useful gift.
