DIY Recycle fabric remnants: Happy New year fabric postcards

BushcraftZ 2013

I have been making greeting cards for many years and often use fabric to embellish the cards. I was therefore intrigued when a colleague told me that she makes quilted fabric post cards entirely from fabric. I wanted to try this out for myself and designed a 2014 New Year themed postcard with a miniature matching bunting to display the card.

NOTE: A standard postcard is 10 cm x 15 cm in size

Materials:
  • Fabric remnants (size of the fabric must be larger than 10 cm x 15 cm)
  • Unbleached calico (larger than 10 cm x 15 cm)
  • Cotton yarn for the bunting
  • Fabric backing
  • Decorative stamp and stamp pad
  • Gel pen and ruler
  • Embellishments such as beads, buttons and ribbons
  • General sewing equipment, contrasting cotton thread and fabric glue

Method:
  1. Cut a rectangle from the fabric remnant larger than the 14 cm x 15 cm standard postcard size.

  2. Iron four  5 cm x 7 cm fabric remnants in contrasting colours onto fabric backing. Cut out the numbers ‘2’, ‘0’, ‘1’ and ‘4’ from these pieces. Arrange the numbers onto the fabric post card to write ‘2014’. One can use a little fabric glue to stick the numbers onto the fabric.

  3. Cut a piece of fabric backing larger than the postcard and place the embellished postcard onto the backing.
  4. Place the freestyle embroidery foot into the sewing machine and lower the feeder mechanism. Set the sewing machine onto straight stitch. Sew the numbers onto the postcard using freeform patterns to create a quilted effect. Alternatively, sew the pieces in place by hand with small evenly spaced running stitches.

  5. Embellish with beads or buttons.

  6. Cut the quilted fabric to postcard size 10 cm x 15 cm.
  7. Place the completed postcard onto the unbleached calico. Cut the calico slightly larger than the postcard.  Mark the outline of the postcard on the calico.
  8. Decorate the calico by stamping a small image in the top right hand corner. Use a gel pen to draw a postage stamp around the image. (Stay within the outline of the postcard.) Divide the card into two halves, leave the left side free for the message and draw lines for the address below the postage stamp.

  9. Align the postcard and calico back neatly and stitch around the edge of the postcard with straight stitching. Cut away excess calico to match the size of the postcard. If the fabric frays around the edges of the postcard, neaten the edges with zig-zag stitching to complete the postcard.
Optional:
Make a miniature bunting by cutting out small triangles from matching fabric remnants. Sew the triangles onto the cotton yarn or ribbon to make a bunting. Attach the card to the bunting with a few stitches.

Write a message onto the back of the postcard and include the address for an authentic look. Place the postcard including the bunting into an envelope and send the card in the post or use it a hostess gift for a New Years party.
