DIY: Two Pencil bag designs

BushcraftZ 2014
At the beginning of a year we often want to replace our old, well used utility bags such as pencil bags to mark a new beginning.  In South Africa we not only start a new year at work but also the school year begins in January. Even in this technological driven era of computers, tablets and smart phones we still draw and write by hand at work, home and in school. A new pencil case is therefore just the item to store our writing tools and accessories. Below I share two of my patterns to make new, fairly large, pencil bags. These can of course also be used to store other items. The projects are quick and easy and  are fun to decorate.

Materials
  • Fabric remnants to fit the pattern
  • 30cm zip (both patterns are designed for this length)
  • general sewing equipment
  • ribbon bits and interesting buttons or other trinkets to decorate

A)     Method: Freestyle embroidered pencil bag
  1. Cut out two fabric pieces: A) 13 cm x 34 cm and b) 23 cm x 34 cm
  2. Decorate piece A: Select a fabric with an interesting pattern. One can cut piece out along the printed pattern to create an interesting design. Position this fabric onto piece A prepared in step 1. Insert the embroidery foot into the sewing machine and drop the feeder mechanism. Thread the machine with contrasting cotton thread. Use free hand embroidery to sew the decorative fabric in place.

  3. Insert the zipper between piece A and B along the long edge.

  4. Fold the joined piece in half, right sides together, and pin in place. Open the zipper a fraction to allow access in step 5.

  5. Sew around the three open edges of the pencil case and neaten the edges with zigzag or overlock stitches. Open the zip completely and turn the pencil bag right side out. Press the corners and seams.

  6. To finish off, decorate with buttons and a ribbon the zipper tab.

B)      Method : Triangular 3D pencil bag
  1. Print the pattern from the pdf document  and cut out. Cut 4 pieces from fabric according to the pattern.
  2. Arraqnge the 4 triangular pieces next to each with the long side facing each other and the short sides facing in opposite directions. Place the zipper into position between the first two pieces.
  3. Optional: At this point the individual pieces can be decorated. I used an interesting fabric remnant to decorate piece (1) and (2)

  4. Sew the zipper onto the first two pieces add the third and fourth triangle, again joining the long edges only. Fold the piece right side together and join the final long edges of pieces (1) and (4).

  5. Align the short sides and pin into place. NOTE: The fabric will not lie flat therefore it is useful to pin the fabric together to keep the edges aligned.

  6. Open the zipper slightly. Sew the short sides closed. Take care to ensure that the corners join precisely to ensure a professional finish with sharp corners.
  7. Open the zipper completely and turn the pencil bag right side out. Press out the corners and iron the seams.  The pencil case will have a 3D triangular shape once filled. Decorate further if desired.
