A small sewing kit close on hand is often useful to quickly
sew on a loose button or repair a hem. I disguised a sewing kit in a book cover
so that it can sit on a bookshelf or on a bedside table.
For this project an old book cover saved from the first blog from recycling old books DIY series is used to make the sewing kit. Ensure that the cover is in good condition
and sturdy.
Materials:
- Well preserved old book cover – all pages removed - refer to previous blog-
- Pages from the old book or any other decorative paper
- Cardboard – enough to make a box that will fit into the book cover
- Fabric remnants to make a small pincushion and needlebook, felt remnant, 10 cm ribbon in matching colour, toy stuffing for the pincushion
- Clear drying craft glue, paper scissors, craft knife and cutting mat, ruler, pencil, masking tape.
- General sewing equipment to make the needlebook and pincushion.
Method:
- The inside covers of old books covers are often lined with
beautiful paper and have a small distinct
rim. Use the measurements of the paper lining edge to ensure that the box fits
into the book cover. Take the following measurements width (front and back cover)length (front and back cover) height (back of book - how thick is the book).
BushcraftZ 2014 - Use the measurements to measure out the box pattern on the cardboard. Refer to the template as a guide.
- Cut out the cardboard. Scorch the fold lines and fold the box. Secure the corners on the inside and outside with masking tape. Place the box into the book cover to ensure that it fits well. Remove box for step 4.
- Decorate the box with paper. I used the old book pages to cover the box on the inside and also the outside edges. And decorated the outside edges with Washi tape.
- Open the book cover. Cover the book back with paper glue and position the box onto the back. Ensure that both the front and back covers can still close properly (Do not glue these at this stage). Open the book up again. Use a weight to weigh down the box in this position and allow the glue to dry completely, overnight if possible.
- Cover the bottom of the box with craft glue and close the back cover. Again place a weight into the box and allow the glue to dry. The front cover will form the lid of the sewing kit.
- Optional: Measure the inside dimensions of the box and create partitions from the remaining cardboard. Cover these partitions with
matching paper and glue them into place with clear drying craft glue and allow
to dry.
BushcraftZ 2014 - Cut a circle with a 2.5 cm diameter from paper. Fold the
ribbon in half. Glue the ribbon onto the inside of the front cover so that the
ribbon sticks out in front and finish off by pasting the paper circle over the unfinished
edge of the ribbon.

Kitting out the sewing kit:
Small pincushion: Determine how much space can be allocated
for a pincushion. Cut out two fabric squares according to size. Right side together along sew 3 sides. Turn
right side out. Stuff the pincushion as tightly as possible with the toy
stuffing. Turn the edges inside and use ladder stitch to close the opening. My pincushion
dimensions are: 9 cm x 6 cm.

Small needlebook: Cut a piece of fabric 22 cm x 7 cm in
size. Cut one piece of felt 10 cm and 6 cm and a piece of thin cardboard the
same size as the felt. Fold the fabric in half. Insert the cardboard with the
felt on top into the folded fabric. Ensure that all layers are aligned. Sew
along the fold of the fabric cover all three pieces. Insert a selection of
sewing needles.
