DIY: Tweetie bird barefoot baby shoes

A colleague requested that I try and make barefoot baby shoes for her and send me a few links as a reference. I made three designs for her and she was thrilled. All designs were very girly with flowers, hearts and bows. I searched for other ideas and found a blog showing an alternative design for the barefoot baby shoes. This design inspired me to try and make a unisex barefoot baby shoe and decided on a tweetie bird to match the musical notes printed elastic I intended to use for the shoes. I share my pattern below.

Materials
  • Premier natural cotton yearn 4 ply (Elle) in two colours
  • Matching colour felt remnant and two small buttons
  • 1m soft elastic – 2 cm wide
  • General sewing equipment

Patterns:
Abbreviations (US terms are shown in brackets)
ch = chain

dc = double crochet (US - sc = single crochet)
tr = treble crochet (US - dc= double crochet)

Begin with a slipknot, ch 5, insert crochet needle into first chain and close with a sl st to form a ring.

Assembly

BushcraftZ 2014
Cut two identical egg shaped pieces from felt and secure to the head with a button. Sew the wings in place and highlight the tail with 5 stitches in contracting colour.

  1. Measure the circumference of the baby’s ankle and foot at the instep. Add the two measurements and deduct 2 cm. Use this measurement to determine the length of elastic needed for one shoe.
  2. Cut two pieces of elastic according to measurement. (I used 25 cm – this is for a very small child - up to 6 months)
  3.  Fold the elastic into a figure 8 with the ends overlapping at the junction of the figure 8. Sew together at the juncture.

  4. Sew one bird on to each elastic to complete the barefoot baby shoes. The birds should face in opposite directions.
