Recycle DIY: 5 quick projects made from one tissue box

BushcraftZ 2014
The designs found on tissue boxes are sometimes beautiful and it is a pity to discard these trendy printed pieces of cardboard once the tissues have been used up. This inspired me to see what I can make from one tissue box using only general craft supplies at hand and paper scraps, string and ribbon.

Materials:

  • Empty tissue box printed with an interesting design
  • Scrap paper and cardboard in matching colours
  • Cutting mat, craft knife and ruler; scissors, paper glue, various decorative punches, string and ribbon remnants, magnet sheet cut-offs
Preparation:
Disassemble the tissue box. Slip the craft knife between the glued cardboard edges and gently pry the glued surfaces apart, try not to damage the cardboard.
Look at the opened up cardboard and cut away all sections that you may not want to use.

Magnetized bookmark

Use a long piece of cardboard and cut it into a rectangle. Select a matching ribbon remnant approximately 10 cm long. Cut two squares for the magnet sheet using the width of the cardboard as a guide. Place the cardboard with the design facing downward and glue the ribbon and one magnet square to the top end of the cardboard.

Glue the other end of the ribbon to the back of the second magnet square and finish off by sticking with a piece of decorative paper or fabric over the back of the magnet sheet.

Cutlery holder

Cut a large piece of printed cardboard into a rectangle, large enough to fit the cutlery. Also cut a 1.5 cm to 2 cm wide cardboard strip, 3 cm longer than the width of the rectangle. Fold over 1 cm from each end of the strip and secure to the back of the rectangle with glue or sticky tape. Insert the cutlery and decorate further, if desired.

Notebook cover
