This fun project uses the character features only found in
old well-worn jeans to make a cool saddlebag. Try to preserve the distinctive
features such as worn areas and interesting stitching and typical jeans edges
when you cut out the pieces. This may take some effort, but the reward is a
one-of-a-kind bag with a lot of character.
Materials:
- 1 x old pair of jeans
- 5 magnetic buttons or press studs
- 5 buttons
- 2 half moon rings
- 1.5 m strap and/or a leather strap such as an old leather belt
- General sewing supplies including a sewing machine
Method:
1. Place the jeans on a work surface with the back
facing up. Cut away the legs at the crotch and separate the front and back of
the jeans at the side seams. Use the back of the jeans for the FRONT panel of
the saddlebag. Square this panel as best
possible without cutting into the pockets. Save the front of the jeans for future
project.

2. Cut open the two jeans legs at the side
seam. Use one leg aside for step 3 and
the other leg for step 4.

3. Fold open one leg (prepared in step 2) and
position the FRONT panel (prepared in step 1) onto the leg as shown in this
photo. Cut away excess material around from the leg around the side and bottom
of the FRONT panel . This will form the BACK panel and flap of the saddlebag.

4. Use the remaining leg and left over fabric to
prepare the bottom and two side panels of the saddlebag. ( My panels were 12 cm wide.)

5. Cut two pocket flaps from remaining jeans fabric
remnants. Measure these according to the size of the pockets featured on the
front panel.

6. Cut two 15 cm x 12 cm rectangles. Save any
larger unused pieces of material for future projects.
You should now have the following pieces.
- · 1 x front panel (cut from the back of the jeans)
- · 1 x back panel and flap (cut from one jeans leg)
- · 1 x bottom panel
- · 2 x side panel
- · 2 x small pocket flaps
- · 2 x rectangles
7. Use an overlock or zigzag stitch to neaten all
cut edges.
8. Make two small bands for step 9: Fold the rectangles cut in right side facing
lengthwise in half and sew along the long edge. Turn the pieces right side out
and iron into place. Neaten the raw edges with overlock or zigzag stitches.
9. Fold the bands in half and thread thought the
halfmoon rings. Place then on the top edges of the two side panels and sew
securely into place.

10. Sew the two small flaps in position above the
pockets on the front panel.
11. Assemble saddlebag: With right sides facing, sew
the two side panels onto the front panel. Join the back panel to the two side
panels. Sew the bottom panel into position. Turn the bad right side out.
12. Determine the length of the strap required and
attach the strap around the half moon rings.
Insert magnetic buttons for the flaps. Cover the exposed magnetic buttons by sewing decorative buttons into place. (I used large raw wood
buttons I found at a craft store.)BushcraftZ 2014 |
