Recycle DIY: Coffee mug desk organizer

BushcraftZ 2014
We all have had a favorite mug that accidentally got chipped while washing the dishes. I transformed my damaged mug into a desk organizer hiding the chip with a T-shirt fabric sleeve.

Materials:

  • Coffee mug (with a chip)
  • Matching T-shirt fabric remnant
  • Ribbon off-cut
  •  Wood clothes peg, trinkets for decoration
  • General craft supplies including clear drying craft glue and hot glue.

Method:
  1. Measure the distance between the handle and top edge of the mug. Add 5 cm to this length. Measure the circumference of the mug. Use these measurements to cut a piece of T-shit fabric to size. Take care that the stretch of the fabric runs in the direction of the circumference measurement of the mug.

  2. Fold the fabric right side together and sew the short edges together approximately 1 cm from the edge. Turn fabric right side out.
  3. Cover the area between the top edge and the mug handle with clear drying craft glue and also 5cm down the inside of the mug. Slip the fabric cover over the top of the mug and adjust it to be in line with the handle and fold the rest of the fabric inside. Smooth the fabric so that there are no wrinkles. Allow glue to dry.

  4. Use ribbon to trim the  fabric edge. Add decorations. I added an crochet flower in matching colours
  5. Decorate the wood peg with ribbon and use hot glue to glue it onto the handle to complete the desk organizer.
