Recycle DIY: Keyboard coasters

BushcraftZ 2014

BushcraftZ 2014

These coasters are dedicated to all my friends and colleagues who so patiently help me with any computer issues and try their best to help me cope with the changes and challenges in the fast paced world of information technology.

Materials:
  • computer keys removed from old keyboards
  • chick cardboard or plywood
  • corkboard, faux leather or felt remnants
  • contact adhesive, cutting tools, ruler, pencil

Method:
  1. Clean the reclaimed keyboard keys with soap and water and allow to dry. Sort the keys according to height and shape.  It is best to place the keys next to each other on a flat surface to check that the height and shape of the keys are the same and are horizontal (Some keyboard keys are angled). TIP: Sometimes keys have an internal pin that is longer that the side edges. Just break the plastic pin off with a pair of pliers.
  2. Arrange keys with the same height in a 5 x 5 key square until you are satisfied with the design.

  3. Align the 5 x 5 key square sides accurately and determine the dimensions of the square. Use these dimensions to cut a support base from cardboard or plywood. Ensure that cut the edges are smooth and clean cut.

  4. Cover the surface of the support base with a liberal layer contact adhesive and transfer the keys in order onto the surface. Ensure that the sides are well aligned. Allow to dry.
  5. Finish the coaster off by gluing corkboard, faux leather or felt to the base of the coaster and trim the edges neatly.
