DIY: Trendy T-shirt for Tweens

BushcraftZ 2014
December is summer holiday time with lots of fun in the sun in South Africa. DIY T-shirts are the perfect addition to the summer wardsobe. Today I feature an easy way of customising  plain coloured T-shirts for summer is to use a 'spritz' of bleach and a template. This quick, afternoon project is best done outside in the hot sun wearing old clothes and away from any precious items.

Materials:
  • Coloured T-shirt
  • Household bleach in a spritz bottle
  • Design cut from cardboard.
  • Cardboard to fit the inside of the T-shirt

Method:
  1. Wash and dry the T-shirt. Prepare the T-shirt by placing a cardboard into the T-shirt to prevent the bleach on seeping through to the back of the T-shirt.
  2. Cut out a design from cardboard and place it on the T-shirt.

  3. Pour a bit of household bleach into a spritz bottle and spray the bleach over the T-shirt concentrating in the area of the template. At this point one can play with amount of spray. Rather start conservatively on the first round and spray another layer of bleach if required. Remove the template and allow the bleach to dry in the sun and watch the design emerge.

  4. Once satisfied with the design, wash the T-shirt in cold water to rinse out all the bleach and hang to dry.

  5. For further details the T-shirt can be embellished with embroidery stitches, sequence and beads or permanent marker pens to complete the look.
