DIY: Christmas tree decoration made from modelling felt

BushcraftZ 2014
I made these simple Christmas trees from modelling felt but they can easily be made from ordinary felt, sturdy fabric or paper. These festive trees can be used as gift decorations, window decor or hung on the Christmas tree.

Materials:
  • Modelling felt 20 cm x 30 cm
  • Embroidery thread in matching colour.
  • Raw wood beads in various sizes
  • Scissors, embroidery needle, ruler, gel pen, trinkets and beads to decorate the tree, clothes peg

Method:
  1. Cut six 15 cm x 2.2cm strips from the modelling felt.

  2. Place two felt strips on top of each other. Secure one end with a few stitches and end off.

  3. Fold the bottom ends up so that they meet each other. Add one strip on each side and stitch together. (Use a clothes peg to secure the ends if you do not have enough hands.)

  4. Fold the two outer felt strips up. Again add one strip on each side and stitch together.

  5. Fold the outer strips up. Stitch these two strips together approximately 2 cm from the end to form the tip off the tree.

  6. Shape the tree gently. At this point the modelling felt can be wet with water and shaped. Allow to dry completely before continuing.
  7. Thread two raw wood beads onto a long piece of embroidery thread and thread the embroidery cotton though the middle stem of the tree from the bottom towards the tip. It is optional to add beads along the stem between each section. Secure at the top of the tree and create a loop to be able to hang the ornament.

  8. The tree can be decorated with beads and trinkets.
