DIY: USB thumb drive storage case.

BushcraftZ 2014
USB thumb drives are very useful e-storage devices. Over time I have accumulated many and due to their small size they tend to disappear easily. I was inspired by an internet photo of a USB drive storage case. These small storage cases are easily created from fabric remnants that lie about, a few buttons and yarn.

Materials
  • 20 cm x 25cm fabric
  • 12cm x 20 cm T-shirting fabric or felt
  • 20cm x 25cm lining or calico fabric
  • 2 buttons
  • 2 wood beads
  • 4 ply cotton yarn in matching colours or thin ribbon
  • General sewing equipment

Method:
  1. Fold over a 1cm edge along the two 20cm edges of the T-shirting fabric and sew into place create a finished edge for the storage pockets.
  2. Place the lining right side up and position the prepared T-shirting fabric right side up 5 cm from the bottom edge. Pin into place.

  3. Determine the centre horizontal line of the T-shirting fabric and sew the two fabrics together along this line. Measure out the width of the thumb drive pocket sizes (I made 2.5 and 3 cm wide pockets to accommodate thumb drives of various sizes and allow 1 cm on each edge for the seam allowance of the case). Sew lines perpendicular to the centre line in order to form pockets. Iron case lining after completion.

  4. Place the lining and fabric right sides together and sew along the edges leaving a 5-7 cm gap. Turn the fabric right side out. Close the opening with a few invisible stitches.
  5. Cut two 30 cm lengths of matching cotton yarn. Fold the case at the centre line of the T-shirting fabric. On the outside, along the fold of the case, mark the position to attach the yarn, 4 cm from each edge. Use an embroidery needle and securely attach the yarn at these positions with a few stitches. Trim the yarn to be 20 cm in length on each side. (Check that the yarn is attached on the centre line of the inside pockets.)  Attach a bead on each end to finish off.

  6. Sew the two buttons in place to finish the storage case.
  7. Place the USB thumb drives into the small pockets to store. The T-shirting material should be able to stretch to ensure a tight fit. Close the pockets and wrap the yarn around the buttons to secure.

TIP: Note the contents of the USB drives with a soft pencil on the lining for easy reference.

TIP: One can also adjust the size of the pockets to fit camera storage disks secured in their protective plastic covers.
