This adorable apron and adjustable chefs hat set is for our favourite mini chefs to celebrate those occasions where they create their own food.
SIZE: length 50cm ( 4-6 years). This easy pattern can be adjusted to fit any size
Materials:
- 1.5 m X 0.6 m fabric (I used bull denim)
- 5 m bias cotton binding
- 5 cm Velcro strip
- Large sheet of paper, pencil, ruler and scissors to make the pattern
- Download Pattern sheet
- General sewing equipment including sewing machine
Method:
1. Use the pattern sheet as a guide and make a pattern for the
apron and chefs hat from paper.
2. Cut out the following from fabric according to your pattern:
1 x apron, 1 x chefs hat headband, 1 x chefs hat top.
APRON
3. Cut 2 x 1.5 m lengths from the bias binding and set aside.
4. Use the remaining bias binding to encase edges of the top (across
chest) the two sides and hem of the apron. Leave the underarm edges free.
5. Fold a bias binding strip cut in step 3 lengthwise in
half. Sew the two sides together to from a 50 cm tie. Keep the bias binding in
the sewing machine with the needle down. Lift the machine foot and insert the
apron between the bias binding edges starting in the underarm area. Continue
sewing until the end apron. Pause with the needle down. Continue sewing the remaining
section of the bias binding to form the neck tie. Repeat for the other side of
the apron starting from the neck tie side and sewing towards the underarm area.
Measure the bands so that they are equal
length and trim excess. Knot the ends of each band to finish off.

6. Optional pocket: Cut out a 16 cm x 16 cm square from the remaining
material. Embroider a name or decorate the square. Fold over a 2 cm edge for each of the 4 sides.
Ion edges. Position the pocket on the chest and top stitch into place to form a
pocket.
CHEFS HAT
7. Cover the edges of the slit in the chefs hat top with bias
binding.
8. Sew basting stitch approximately 1 cm from the edge around circumference
of the circle and set aside.
9. Prepare the headband. Cover one long edge of the headband with bias binding. This will be the front edge in step 12.
10. Position the headband right side facing. Place the hook tape
of the Velcro in the bottom left hand corner ( 1.5 cm from the edges) and the
loop tape of the Velcro on the top right hand corner ( 1.5 cm from the edges) .
Sew both tapes into place.
11. Fold the headband right side together and sew the two short
sides together. Turn right side out and iron.
12. To insert the top of the hat into the headband gather the
edges to form a puffy top so that the gathered circumference is approximately the
same length as the headband.
Sew the puffy top onto the ‘back ‘of the headband (the edge
that is not covered with the bias binding). The gathered edge of puffy top
should now lie between the front and back sides of the headband. Fold the front
of headband over so that the bias binding covers the gathered edges. Top stitch
the open edge closed just below the red bias binding to complete the chefs hat.

NOTE: The apron and chefs hat patterns can be adjusted to
fit any size. Larger sizes require more fabric and bias binding. Also
increase the length of the ties to fit a larger person.
