BushcraftZ 2015 |
Sometimes it is a pity to discard old utility items such as
hard cover eye-glass cases just because their appearance is not attractive
anymore or one is wearing a new set of glasses that do not fit into the old
case. Often the core of these cases is still good and with a small facelift can
be re-purposed into a useful compact storage option. For this project I re-purposed a
eye-glass case into a one-of-a-kind storage unit for my earphones and cellphone
charger cable. Easy and neat to pop into my handbag without getting all the
cables tangled and damaged.
- Old eye-glass hard cover case with intact hinges
- Fabric scraps
- Modelling felt
- Clear drying craft glue
- Scissors, paint brush, measuring tape
- Elastic remnants
Method
- Strip the existing inside and outside cover from the
eye-glass case.

BushcraftZ 2015 - Measure the size of the two outside cover pieces and cut the fabric approximately 2-3 cm larger than the measurements.
- Use a paint brush and cover the whole outside of the case
with clear drying craft glue. Carefully smooth the fabric onto the outside of the
case. Fold the fabric over towards the inside stretching it into place. Take
care to leave space for the hinges to open and close. Allow the glue to dry.
BushcraftZ 2015 - Cover the outside of the fabric with another layer of glue and allow to dry.
- Open the case and trim any excess fabric.
- Measure the inside dimensions and cut two pieces of modelling felt accordingly. Wet the modelling felt according to manufacturer’s instructions. Apply glue to the inside of the case cover and mold the felt into the case to create a lining. Cover the entire felt with glue and allow to dry.
- Cover the felt lining with another layer of glue and allow to dry.
- Open the case and trim any excess felt.
- Sew elastic remnants into loops and glue the loop into the
case.
BushcraftZ 2015 - Store earphones and charger cables in the loops of the case.
